Let’s be real—pregnancy is beautiful, wild, exhausting, and absolutely worth capturing. But planning a maternity photoshoot can feel like just another thing on your (already overflowing) to-do list. I get it, mama. I’m a local photographer and a mom, and I’m here to tell you that your maternity session doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, it can be fun, relaxing, and honestly one of the highlights of your pregnancy.
I’ve photographed so many incredible women across the Capital Region of Upstate New York—including Saratoga, Clifton Park, Albany, Schenectady, and everywhere in between—and I know how to make this experience feel totally effortless. Let me walk you through everything you need to know to slay your maternity photoshoot like the radiant queen you are.
When to Schedule Your Maternity Photoshoot
Timing is everything, especially when you’re growing a human. The sweet spot for most mamas is between 28 and 34 weeks—that’s when your bump is round and proud, but you’re still feeling pretty mobile. If you’re expecting twins or navigating a high-risk pregnancy, we’ll just plan a bit earlier.
And can we talk about how gorgeous this area is through the seasons? Think golden leaves in late September at The Crossings or Round Lake Preserve, or soft pink blooms in early May at Washington Park in Albany or Yaddo Gardens in Saratoga. Capital Region nature is your backdrop, mama.
Picking Your Dreamy Location
There are so many swoon-worthy spots around here. Here are some of my favorite places to shoot maternity sessions:
- The Crossings of Colonie: Wide open fields, charming bridges, and soft golden light—it’s an all-around fave.
- Round Lake Preserve: Perfect if you’re into peaceful boardwalks, dreamy lake views, and woodsy vibes.
- Yaddo Gardens (Saratoga Springs): Romantic AF. Think rose gardens, fountains, and European-style stonework.
- Washington Park (Albany): A springtime dream when the tulips pop, and totally magical in the fall.
- Bob’s Trees (near Galway): Want a winter wonderland vibe? This place is pure snowy perfection.
- Studio B or The Suite: Cozy, well-lit, and climate-controlled for when Upstate NY weather is doing its own thing.
What to Wear: Because Yes, You Deserve to Feel Gorgeous
You do not need to stress about outfits. Long, flowy dresses are flattering and make you feel like a goddess (trust me). I’m talking earth tones, soft pastels, creams, and textures that pop against the natural backdrop. Bring a backup if you’re unsure, and I’ve got some curated maternity gowns in my client closet if you want to feel extra glam without the extra effort. Also: barefoot in the grass is a vibe. Just saying.
Bring the Fam, Fur Babies Included
This session is all about celebrating your growing crew, so yes—bring your partner, your kids, even the dog. Some of my favorite shots come from the candid moments between poses. Places like Halfmoon Town Park and The Crossings are perfect because there’s space for the little ones to run around and be themselves while we capture that real-life magic.
What to Expect (Besides Feeling Like a Queen)
Our session will be totally chill. Most shoots run about 45 to 90 minutes, and we take things at your pace. We’ll chat, laugh, walk a bit, and pause when needed. I’ve already scoped out the lighting and the best angles, so you don’t need to worry about anything except showing up and being your beautiful self.
I’ll guide you through the whole thing so you never feel awkward or unsure. I’m here to hype you up and help you feel amazing.
