If you’ve ever scrolled past a dreamy photo of someone standing in a field of sunflowers and thought, “I need that in my life,” you’re not alone. Sunflower sessions are one of the most magical—and most requested—types of photoshoots I offer here in the Capital Region. And honestly? They live up to the hype every single time.
Whether you’re planning a family session, maternity shoot, engagement photos, or just want to treat yourself to something gorgeous and golden, sunflower fields are the perfect backdrop. Here’s everything you need to know about booking a sunflower photoshoot in Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, Troy, and beyond.
When Is Sunflower Season in Upstate NY?
Sunflowers typically bloom in late July through early September, depending on the weather. That means you have a pretty short window to snag those golden hour shots while the flowers are in their prime.
Pro tip: these sessions book up fast. Once the fields bloom, they don’t last long. If you’ve got your heart set on sunflower magic, reach out early so we can plan ahead and make it happen.
Where We Shoot
There are a few local sunflower farms and hidden gems around the Capital Region that make the perfect photo spot. I keep an updated list of the best locations (and their bloom status), but some of my favorites include:
- Fields near Saratoga County and Washington County
- Hidden roadside spots in Southern Vermont
- Seasonal farms with public access and gorgeous golden rows
Not all fields are open to the public, so I always make sure we have permission and know the best time of day to shoot for that soft, golden light.
Who Sunflower Sessions Are Perfect For
Honestly? Everyone.
- Families – Kids love running through the flowers, and the whole vibe is playful and light.
- Maternity sessions – Talk about glow-on-glow. That belly + that light = magic.
- Couples – Whether it’s an anniversary or engagement, sunflower fields add so much romance.
- Content creators & seniors – If you’re looking for something unique and totally Insta-worthy, sunflower sessions deliver.
What to Wear
Sunflower sessions are warm, bright, and full of color, so I usually recommend outfits in soft neutrals (think creams, whites, denim, earth tones) to let the flowers do the talking. But don’t be afraid to add a pop of yellow or mustard for that fun, summery vibe.
Flowy dresses, rompers, linen shirts—anything with texture and movement photographs beautifully in these settings.
Let’s Make It Golden
